David,
Sounds like you may have had a pressure relief valve
that has a weak spring, or, a piece of debris got lodged
under the check ball for a period. Hydralic systems
typically have one somewhere to prevent damage. Pressure
once it reaches a pre-set maximum operating level overcomes
spring pressure and re-circulates through the pump. If
it was a piece of something it may never happen again.
