Changing an FC air filter

Well, I thought figuring out how to check/change the air filter in my
87FC35 would be intuitive. After working at it for a few minutes, I
decided I better ask before I tore something up.

The air filter is in my passenger side battery compartment. There is
a big canister there with two or three bands around it that snap into
place. I unsnapped these, but nothing really came apart so I could
get to the filter inside.

How do I get to the filter?

Is this also the filter for my air compressor?
