Dan,
Sounds like an axel seal is leaking. The brake shoes are most likely saturated in oil. Do not drive the 1,500 miles without correcting the problem. I just had the same problem but it was the tag axel. Glad the shop noticed it before I took off on a 5,000 mile test drive. Good luck. Curt Sprenger 1987 PT38 Anaheim, Ca.
