Replacing the pulley on a FC to fix the belt issues
Joe. I purchased an 82 FC35 a few weeks ago. The A/C compressor on mine looks
brand new,(shiney black) . Although I haven't tried mine yet, it looks like a York. These compressors weigh a ton, and are prone to vibrate, so it wouldn't surprise me if that belt did fly off. I'd check the mounts, make sure they're not cracked, throw a belt on try it out. Just remember that system needs pressure to kick the clutch on, so make sure it's engauging and not just spinning the pulley, and if it's seized I'd look into some later model aftermarket compressor that's half the size and weight. (maybe a rotary model) I'm not sure if this would work, or if there is a conversion already been done, but it may be worth checking out. Good luck. Jimmy hsaddock My 83FC35 has a single belt to the AC compressor â it is a long one, prone to bouncing around a bit but like Ken mentioned, I have not had an issue with it coming off and taking the other belts with it. In fact, I have driven over 30K miles and never had a problem (with that belt). There is a modification some folks have done that involves replacing the alternator pulley with a three groove and using one of those grooves to run to the AC compressor â I have chosen not to jump into that mod for the following reasons â 1) I have not calculated the rpm difference/required at the compressor and 2) what size pulley (and magnetic clutch ) one would have to have on the AC compressor to obtain the correct speed, 3) one would probably have to adjust the position of the AC compressor to allow the new belt configuration to properly align with the alternator pulley and 4) then how does on adjust tension of this belt, probably have to modify the AC compressor mount to allow for a tension adjustment or mount a tension idler somewhere. I have chosen to run with the factory configuration, properly adjusted and aligned, it seems to work fine. But, properly engineered and installed the mod would be an improvement over the long bouncy belt.
