Fuel gauge trouble
Hi John:

The resistor is usually used to balance the gauge and sender and match the
ohms needed for the gauge.

It sounds like the ground and hot are reversed on one end or the other. It
should not hurt anything to replace the resistor, pull the sending unit and
reverse the ground and hot and see what your gauge does.
