Leaking air when braking
I'm just guessing and telling you what I would do, and I am not totally familiar
with the system. Based on the symptoms, logically it does not appear anything let go downstream of an air control valve because it is now normal. My guess is that some foreign material may have gotten into an air control valve and was subsequently expelled overboard when the brakes were released. My air drawings are at the bus or I could look to see how the air flows and exits the system. To my thinking, and sometimes that is radical, the symptoms indicate an air control valve or beyond. I would not do anything now, and that is easy to say because it is not my bus. You could go on a wild goose chase trying to find out what happened. Just my logical guess. If you have an air system drawing you should be able to see how the air gets around. If not, I have one for my 1990 and can supply it to you later in the week. When I let off the brakes, the hissing stopped, and the air began to build up normally. The air sounded like it was somewhere street side, toward the middle or front part of the bus. It was like an air line to a wheel came off, but the brakes worked fine. The air got down to around 70 PSI, and after about 5 minutes of this 0-10mph using the brakes only when necessary (big gap to the car ahead of me) everything return to normal...no more hissing on braking, pressure built up to around 125-130 PSI and purged from the dryer, etc, and the rest of the 60 or so miles home were uneventful. Don't we love these intermittent problems.... Something stuck, and now OK? Something to look for/replace? Since it is OK now, where should I begin to look? I was afraid of getting stuck on the So Cal Fwy's when the air got down to 30 PSI and my brake button popped...ideas??
