88 WBWL Speedometer
Hey Jim,
These speedos are tricky but do not give up just Yet. They are obsolete, when replaced you will probably lose the trip meter and the new speedo may not match the other gages. First check the ground wire attached to the frame. On our FC it is located on the rear wheel passenger side, then look at the sensor pickup mounted near the toothed brake drum, that is where the signal in generated. Check the 12 volts DC to ground at the speedo. Next hook up an AC volt meter on a low voltage scale to the speedo ground and the sender terminal, Take it for a ride and the meter should register a low AC voltage and increase as your speed increases. This is a sine wave that increases in amplitude, It would be nice to have an ocilliscope for this , But not necessary. This will isolate the problem to the sender or the speedo. As you drive tap , tap, tap on the face of the speedo , see if there is any change in the needle. When you have exhausted all options and have determined that the speedo is really dead. Remove the speedo and open the face and look for loose , pinched wires or cracked/cold solder joints. There are a lot of parts inside the speedo head. This has work for me, Our speedo now hums along and trips the meter. There are speedo shops that may repair it.
