It makes it easier if you unplug the electrical and air from the seat,
looses the swivel lock and lift the seat up and lay it back in the couch.
This gives you a lot more room to work.

On my '81 I have had that space open three times now; hope never to do it
again.

When you pull back the carpet, there may or may not be carpet insulation
underneath. If there is, remove it also;

To the right and a little behind the steering column, you should see a piece
of aluminum sheeting about 3" X 6" held in by four sheet metal screws. If
you remove this, you can plainly see the top of the steering box. You can
inspect your hose connections from here and you can also inspect the two top
bolts that hold the steering box in place. This is the ONLY way you can
assure these bolts are tight.

It is NOT fun job. Good luck.
