Bridge Education
I have driven the mountains out West for years having lived there but never in a
Bird. We decided to take the weekend and hit the bunny hills of NE Alabama
specifically Guntersville Mountain and Lake. No WiFi, no TV, no cell service. It
was fun, like the good old days. Uneventful on the ten mile climb up. Until, I
punched in the closest exit in the GPS. The other road down to Albertville. The
first event was a 3 mile climb straight up in second gear at 15mph on a tiny
mountain road. The bus did great. Then I figured no problem because I knew the
drop from there was about 10 miles and the retarder was working fine. Oops! The
sign says, "weight restricted bridge ahead." That can't be good because there
ain't no turning around. Got lucky, it was two one lane bridges about 100 feet
apart with 24 ton capacity, over a deep gorge. That made my @#$ bite the seat.
I found out later today that locals call them "Double Bridges" and many bike
riders do not venture where I ventured today.
I will be certain to consider the longer way home next time and consider the
possibility of bridges. It never enter my mind.
