strange exhaust question
The tailpipe on my 88 FC had a huge hole at the elbow. On an 88 the
tailpipe is one piece consisting of a 90 degree bend and a short pipe about 30 inches long. It exits in front of the LH tire. The original was simply a 5 inch pipe that was slightly oval at the end. That could be factory or maybe it got crunched. I ordered a new elbow and a 36 inch pipe. I was unable to get a straight pipe as it was out of stock and got what is called a stack pipe. This is a 5 inch pipe with a sharp bend at the end and a tapered cut. These are the pipes you see behind the cabs on 18 wheelers. My plan was to just cut the curved portion off. But with a trial fit I think I could leave the tapered curve and this might force all the diesel smoke and fumes to the rear. Problem is it would be throwing all that at the rear tires . I began wondering if that might harm the tires or would it matter? Am I being anal? Any suggestions? Any help appreciated. BTW : The tailpipe pieces are just common Nelson ( Fleetguard) pipes. I have the part #s if anyone is interested. Bruce |
