Bill A swap out is pretty easy that being said your generator is old technology. If you have no obstruction in the intake air and the filter is new and you still smoke and soot up it mat be the injectors are worn out and it's possible the injector pump is also worn out.The old blue birds with the radiator mounted up front are just plane noise you hearing the fan beating the air. There are 1983 & 1984units out there where the radiator was moved from the front to the driver front side compartment laying the radiator down using a squirrel blower to blow down thought the radiator that will quite the generator down.

Hey, Bob, haven't talked to you in a long time. Hope your doing good.
Of course you remember when I bought this coach, you were a great
help and I'll never forget your kindness.

How hard is the swap-out and is the newer generator quieter. Mine is
a front mounted radiator and actually starts and runs good everytime,
except for all these problems. It uses no oil and when slid out will
run forever. But that puts smoky exhaust under the coach and makes it
louder.
