Why is my gas gauge pessimistic?

The gage was reading empty and the fuel bill was close $ 700.00 that was last June or July when I brought it home. I was told that when reading zero I still had 50 gallons left and the gauge was off by 50 gallons. Since is appears to be a problem with all birds of our vintage, I still thinking of some type of dip stick to verify the quantity. I will post pictures here and on the new owners site.
