You do not have to put another diode in if you do not desire, you caninstall a solenoid instead and it would do basically the same thing. Have the solenoid turned on when you turn the ignition switch on.
One thing to remember as well, there is a 0.6 volt drop across the diode and then the length of wire so it could be 1 volt lower at the generator battery vs the remainder of the battery system. If you were to install a solenoid, then you would not have the 0.6 volt drop but still the length of wire voltage drop.
