Rides
Yup, 'Krashtesterken', that was given to my after an airlift evacuation from a motorcycle accident in the forest some years ago. Really stupid accident, bike did exactly what I asked of it, I just was mid-day-dream when I realized that there was a corner. Darn corner interrupted my day-dream! But, I ride in full gear (head to toe), so not a scratch, just a broken collar bone.
I have successfully completed other Iron Butt events (albeit smaller), so this will be a challenge, but we are pretty confident in our plan.
We are utilizing a 2007 BMW R1200GS*. My friend is riding it out from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, I am flying there, and then riding it back. He is then flying off to a business meeting. I usually ride about 20k/year, some commuting, but most is for weekend type rides.
One of the things holding me back from buying a WL is time. At this point, between work, work travel, daughter, and some riding, I just do not have that much time for coach travel, plus wrenching time. My daughter is 8 years old, and with my custody challenges, I really do not have too much travel time available with her. Last summer would have really been our first opportunity (2-weeks through California), but usually her summers are pretty full with other travel (mostly international). Hopefully, within the next two years, our/her schedule will relax a bit, and I will reduce my riding time, and then be ready for a WL. I will not stop riding, just spend fewer weekends on the bike.Currently, many of my weekends are a late night departure, a morning ride, and return by mid-Sunday. All with a very minor total expenditure $$ (tires being a bigger cost than gas at this point on my K1200S). I know that I cannot justify a WL based on $$, but I also do not want to have it sit in my yard, because I do not have the time or $$ to take it out for short weekend trips. On the bike, a nice Sunday Fish Taco run to Ensenada Mexico costs me a total of about $100. That is not a realistic day plan for a WL (customs delays would really hurt it), so it would have to be a weekend trip. But often, we have other commitments for Saturday mornings, or Sunday afternoons, so there would be fewer such trips.
* R1200GS. This bike has tons of mods for long distance riding, from custom seat, lots of aux lighting, Ohlins suspension, Nav, Radar, cruise control, etc. It is very well suited to this type of ride. Bike is 10 months old, and will have 24k/miles by the end of this month.
