what should i do
James,
You are right about some good value on Birds right now if you can afford the maintenance and recurring expenses. Only you can decide if you should buy into the bird family. You have provided little information aobut your plans so I'm limited in any advice I might be able to provide. I am assuming you are planning on using the Bird in the US. One issue might be your planned length of ownership. I would not purchase a Bird unless I were planning on several years of ownership (unless you are a dealer). You mention that you desire to use the Bird while on furlough. Do you plan on selling at the end of the furlough? Selling a Bird is not usually a quick endeavor unless you price it well below market. If you are purchasing a vintage bird, then you will need to plan on a repair budget and factor that by the amount of labor you will provide. If you are purchasing a more recent bird, the repair costs might be reduced (might), but the recurring maintenance will still be required. I am by no means trying to advise against you purchasing a Bird. Just do so with realistic expectations and you will have a more enjoyable Bird experience. You can't go wrong with a Bird if it fits your circumstances.
