Traveling the PCH
CA 1: less up/down grade, longer, more turns, not many true switch backs.
CA 1 follows the coast line very closely. At the numerous rivers (and little ravines), the road ducks back a few hundred yards inland, crosses the creek or whatever, then swings back out to the shore -- these are often fairly tight-radius turns. It runs along cliffs about 200-300 feet above the actual surf line much of the way. There are newer stretches that are built inland a short way, and other stretches that dance along the cliff edge with breathtaking effect. There was a "Modern Marvels" episode on the History Channel about the building of the highway.
