Broken Cord on Michelin Tire
Good question David, I know that blow outs are more likely when the
tire is under inflated because the side walls are flexing and causing
heat buildup which weakens the tire. There is some logic however to
the thought that a maximally inflated tire might not handle the road
hazard because of the inability to flex. On the other hand an under
inflated tire might flex too much and result in a stretched or torn
belt(right?). The air pressure does afford a cushion. So my
suspicion is that a properly inflated tire (even if its maximum
inflation) is the way to go. You would hope all this is factored
into the tire design by the engineers who build the darned things.
Just my logic which could easily be wrong. You would not want to
inflate a tire over its max because I think your logic would
certainly apply at that point. Another way to think of this is you
have pressure pushing out from the inside (inflation pressure) vs
forces from the out side which have to be kept in balance.
