Dave,
Your personal decision may have a lot to do with what kind of service you can get where you live. I am fortunate to have a shop here in town owned by a close friend that has several well-seasoned DD 2- stroke mechanics. The 6-8-12-16 DD's are still widely used in riverboat applications among other things, and his shop always has several rebuilt 2-strokes on hand waiting for their next application. If no such facility is available near you, that is something you will have to consider.
