Jake Brake Problem

Hello,
I'm having a problem with the jake brake on my 98 LXI. It will work
fine for a while and then just stop working. The trans will down shift
but the jakes will not work. At first I thought the cruise was
disabeling it but I tried using it withoout the cruise and it stops
working after the motor get real hot. Seems as though I can shut the
engine off for a while and it will work again for a while.
Has anyone had a similiar problem. How do I chase the problem. I'm not
real sure I know where all the parts are.
