Anyway, when Malcolm quotes that the brain doesn't know what the tongue wants, I thought, " ". It must be that "taste" is in the domain of reflex--it doesn't have to rise into consciousness and be mulled with thought before reacting to it. Taste, smell, sound, these are the most primitive senses, they go into the brain without much filtering. In fact, only some of the data from those senses ever even rises into consciousness. Much of it is filtered out, and some other parts of it we act on without bothering to know it.

It is like when you hear a loud sound nearby, you duck and look around without even trying to think about it, because the fastest nerve fibers in your body go directly from the ear to the spine to muscles. You don't try to process it intellectually, you just do it, thereby living to think another day. Well done, fast fibers, I managed not to be decapitated by an exploding asteroid, thanks to you!

Why's this apropos of WaGu (WaGout)?
