To Idle or Not to Idle? If So, How Long?
The DD manual with my Series 60 states: "cool down" and idle the
engine for 4 minutes before shutting down. (I have a small digital timer clipped to my steering wheel.) As a practical matter, when the oil temp is below 200 and if the engine has been at idle speed for at least a couple of minutes, then it's relatively safe to shut down the engine without damage. If I pull off the freeway directly into a rest stop, then I set the timer for 4 minutes -- check the temp and shut down when the timer sounds. If I've been driving over relatively flat city streets at very modest speeds, then I idle for one to two minutes before shutting down. While there are several differences between the 8v92 and the Series 60, the cool down of the turbo is similar on both engines. Pete Masterson '95 Blue Bird Wanderlodge WBDA 42 aeonix1@...
