The most common problem is a poor ground.

THe system undoubtedly works through a relay (located in one of the power centers), so it may be the ground for the relay or possibly, the relay itself has gone bad (the contacts tend to get burnt and/or corrode over time).

Time to get out the multi-meter and start checking circuits.

The LED is asymptom, but not the reason for the problem.
