Pete, we took up some clay ceramic tile in Wallace craigs 95 and that had the epoxy thinset but no backerboard. Perhaps you had some porcelain tile that required the backerboard.

Ernie,
Just so you know, in a '95 the tile is attached to 'wonder board' (or equivalent) with epoxy thin set. The wonder board is both screwed and thin-setted to the plywood underlayment. (The sub-floor is steel sheet.)
Air chisel would do a good job. I used pry bars and a hammer. It tore up the plywood underlayment so thoroughly, that I then cut it out and pieced in new wood. Patched the seam and some torn-up spots along the edges with a cement-like floor leveling stuff.

I leave here Aug 2nd and head to Tom McCarthy's coach in Ca to do an extreme makeover with new wood and carpet. There is some ceramic tile that will have to be air chisled- messy, but worth it. You can follow the progress by going to my remodeling forum.
