What to look for?
Last weekend I flew to St. Louis to check out a 1986 PT 36 for sale. Larry
Kehler was a big help. He volunteered to meet me at the coach to help with the inspection. Some items we found were: -Cruise control did not work. -Fast Idle not working; when engaged, the engine RPM's continue to increase and never leveled off. -Back-up camera not working, was receiving power, but no picture. -Music horn worked, but very low volume. We could not find a volume control. -Generator worked, but only showed power on one leg. Not sure if the generator feeds both legs? Both air-conditions did run. -Welds are broken on base of upper ladder (not the lower one that is attached to the engine cover) that is used to get on the roof. Simple fix, but what could be the root cause to create the weld to break? -When driving, water started to drip from front roof vented. When I looked on the roof, it didn't appear to have any sitting water. Can there be water trapped in the roof? -Could not get the electric drapes to close, maybe a switch was not turn on somewhere. -It appears to have been winterized since 2007. Not sure if that would have any effects on the plumbing system? -Side vent on the street side that opens upward to get to the batteries/engine does not appear to latch, it just hangs there. Should there be a latch on this? -Vent over shower was cracked and stuck in the open position. -General cosmetic issues: Rust on rims and lugs. Needs tires all around Some rust forming on heater vents with coach. Some of the screws around the coach that secure emblems appear to have rust. Paint is in fair to a bit better then poor condition. My biggest concern that we found was the generator. Any comments on the above would be appreciated. I think I have found a coach (1986 PT36) that will meet my needs and budget. I will be traveling from San Francisco to St. Louis the weekend of the 29th to view the coach. I have printed a check list off of the vintage bird site to help me inspect the coach. > > Can anyone let me know of any major components that I should check out that can possibly be a deal breaker on a 1986 coach? > > Thanks for your help, > > Gerard Kocher > 2003 30' Airstream Travel Trailer > San Francisco, CA > |
