We have metal tube with a larger lip that fits in the fill that will keep the fuel from splashing out. The people we got our Bird from got it and I have seen it on one of the forums. It works great just keep a rag closejust in case.

West Marine carries a overflow suppresser which is a circular bag filled with (what?) that fits over the nozzle and absorbs splash. I guess a towel would work as well and cost less. I keep my supresser in a zip-lock in the fuel compartment. Also, as with many things, slow is good.
