ALLEVIATING DIESEL PUMP BURP?

I bought a couple of those things from West Marine -- and the first "burp" I encountered while using one was well controlled. However, the burp was so significant that I decided that I really didn't want to store the well-soaked "containment ring" and run the risk of spontaneous combustion in the storage compartment. So, I tossed it in the trash barrel by the pump. At $1 each, I quickly decided that scrap rags (which after years and years, I have collected a ton of old towels to tear up) were the lower cost option.

The "containment rings" fulfill a legal requirement for boaters to avoid fuel spillage into the water, but aren't a requirement for our "land yachts" so far.

West Marine carries a overflow suppresser which is a circular bag filled with (what?) that fits over the nozzle and absorbs splash. I guess a towel would work as well and cost less. I keep my supresser in a zip-lock in the fuel compartment. Also, as with many things, slow is good.
