Bird of the Week Photo
About the location and camera -

About 30 miles south of Q on Hwy 95 there is an ice cream stand and a DHS
checkpoint. From there a gravel road heads east into the Kofa Wildlife Reserve.
As you drive in there are several places to get off the road. This spot is about
2 miles in. It requires a desire/willingness to park away from EVERYTHING!

For all those hapless photo geeks like me, the camera is a Nikon D700 and 24mm
tilt/shift f3.5 manual lens, using a tripod and remote shutter release. The
D700 has very low internal noise, allowing night shots that aren't full of what
we used to call "grain" in the days of film. The exposure was f3.5 for around 20
seconds. A 1/4 moon provided light on the bus.

that from a composition standpoint, this is one of the better ones we have had.
Being able to clearly see the Bird and also the stars in the sky made me want to
ask what time, what camera, what lens, etc. I don't know if Bob or Sandi took
the picture, but it is outstanding. OTOH, maybe it is a classic case of right
time, right place! I'm going to guess that they got to see the Milky Way when
it got real dark out there! (BTW, Bob assured me that they were actually within
sight of a large federal security checkpoint about 1/2 mile away, so they were
relatively safe from undocumented folks wandering around the desert in the
middle of the night in southern AZ!)
