I had mine rebuilt as R134 and it works fine.  Needed a new drier and expansion valve but the old compressor was compatible.

Unfortunately,there were some real crazy products out there to relieve the scarcity and overwhelming price of R12 around that time.
It may be the best solution to change it to R134 unless you have some R12 around.
