Alternator for a 8v92

Alternator for a 8v92
Nelson,
I rebuilt my alternators on my 91 WLWB 40. I tried all the tests that
you are hearing about here (including isolating each alt. and letting it try to
pick the load) and when I finally got to the top one, it had black dust coming
out the vents and the bearings were shot. I went ahead and got both overhauled
for $201.00. The nomenclature for them is Prestolite #906011 & 4725JC, Delco
#19010126 (160 AMP), and GM# 1117920. The best source of this info is the data
plate on the alternator when you take it off. I got these numbers from BB and
the Alternators themselves. Be sure and replace the belts so you don't have to
go back into that top one again! (Don't seal it up completely-I ran it about
three hours and went back in to set the correct belt tension before "buttoning"
it up).
Best of luck - by the way, that was 40,000 miles ago and they have been
doing fine.

Hi Greg:

Actually, I have seen it both ways with the dash switch. I have seen the
alts wired to the relays to switch the "view" via a common shunt and they
also pulled in the coil of large solenoids to switch out the alt. Then I
have seen the alts going to an isolator and the dash switch only switched
out the view but not which alt was being used. Personally I would want both
alts putting out and only see the view of each one via the dash switch.

The isolator can be just that or BB used solenoids as isolators as well,
with an and or configuration. These solenoids are separate from the above.

Generally though, the alts are usually working but the view wiring is the
actual problem.

Then we get into the huge 300 amp oil cooled alt. Whew, hate to get that
one rebuilt.

Safe travels,
