Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
Re: Avoiding Coolant problems.

Over the years, the Rally maintenance seminars have
warned that proper coolant Ph, as measured by the
"coolant test strips;" and a thorough flush and
replace of coolant and filter(s) at a minimum of 24
months or 15,000 miles, with 16 gal H2O and 16 gal
coolant and Nitrite additive; are extremely helpful in
lowering risk of "cavitation," (if that is what "ate"
thru the core in this sad instance.)

While BB reportedly uses bulk Texaco coolant and
adds bulk additive, Detroit engine shops recommend
pre-mixed Detroit Diesel "Power Cool" which already
contains the proper amount of Nalcool, their brand of
Nitrite additive (Nalcool 2000 is for use with soft
water, and Nalcool 3000 for hard.)

As for coolant filters, there are apparently two
types available: a regular, or maintenance filter, and
a "needs-based-release," filter, which, in addition to
being a maintenance filter, contains a one-time "shot
of Power Cool" which will be automatically released,
"If Needed." (Need Release Auto Coolant Additive
Filter - Detroit part #23516489, was $64 couple years
ago when last I checked.)

Based upon personal observation of a thorough job to
drain, replace, purge air, and strip test, 2 1/2 to 3
1/2 labor-hours is not out of reason.
