Oil temperature running high.
Jerry,
I was also concerned about the oil temp but BB and Detroit both say that
the two cycle Detroit diesels are designed to operate at 230 degrees. When I had
my engine rebuilt, Stewart & Stevenson in Denver took the time to explain all
this to me when I asked about me installing an oil cooler in the system. They
said that there is an oil/water heat exchanger on the driver's side of the block
plumbed internally (up against the frame - cannot be removed with engine in the
frame) that basically keeps the engine oil at 230 and the water around 190 with
the correct thermostats installed. This heat exchanger in earlier 8V92s had a
"thermister valve" to keep the oil temp up to 230 that could be changed for
different temps but they discontinued that so it wouldn't be changed..
As a pilot also, I was uncomfortable with the oil temp any where over 200
degrees. I've put about 4000 miles on the new engine and it runs right at
230-240 all the time - we'll see what the oil analysis says.

Good luck, Bob & Judy Johannesen

Hello,

When I drive the coach, the oil temperature readout gets
me nervous as it approaches and hangs around the 230 tick mark on
the guage (outside temp about 65 degrees). The coolent temperature
stays between 190-200 which appears normal. I am afraid that.......
