Tachometer on my '86 PT 38'
Greetings,
Been doing a bunch of little things to my BB, and I've noticed that my tach is acting wierd. Is the tach electronic, picking up it's signal from the alternator, or, is there a sending unit of some sort on the 8V92 somewhere? I gave the engine a good pressure washing a couple of days ago...maybe I washed something I shouldn't have. The tach reads normal at idle, and when going to high idle, it climbs like normal, then it's all over the dial. There is a 12ga wire attached to the batt post on the alternator (along with the heavy output battery cable), but removing this little wire does nothing to the tach...any idea where the other end of this wire goes, and what it's for? I guessing that the engine has a tach sending unit somewhere...any help would be appreciated. BTW, I'm still looking for that pesky air compressor governor...I bought a new one to see what it looks like, but hell, I can't find it where everyone tells me to look (Benny at BB said it was curb side, inside the frame rail, just ahead of the engine, but I guess I'm blind!) Help please...I don't feel comfortable driving without a dependable tachometer (playing the radio, you can't even hear the engine in a PT...sorry, all FC owners!)
