Air Conditioner Questions

Jack,
My practice is to replace fan motors until the compressors start making
noise. On my 91 I have only replaced one AC unit and we use them alot in Texas.
On My 78FC31 I eventually replaced both units, but not until they were on their
"last legs". I actually bought a Dometic 13000 btu at Camping Woreld on a
Special at six-months-same-as-cash deal and stored it until the last one finally
died!

There is 1/4 to 3/8 inch of play on the fan motor bearings/bushings.
The compressors APPEAR to be OK. The question is what is the average
life expectancy of the compressor? If it is 10 to 15 years, then I need
to replace both air conditioners. If it is 20 years or more, then I
need to replace JUST the fan motors, which is a LOT cheaper. Answers,
comments and suggestions would be MOST welcome.
