Guns

Respectfully, the first question is not really about guns. The
first question is do you have the will and the capability to defend
yourself from harm? You need the abilty to recognize reasonably
foreseeable life threatening risks, and then you need the skills to
use approprate tools and tactics to address the risk. You take
drinking water into the desert, a jacket when cold outside, and have
a life vest with you on the water....out and about, I also take
reasonable steps to protect my family from the small chance of
criminal victimization.

As far as the gun option(s), I would rather have one and not need
it, than need it and not have it. Beyond that, having a gun,
knowing how to use it, and how to lawfully and safely carry/secure
it and potentially use it, are of course essential knowledge areas
also. So I recommend: keep it simple, effective, and develop and
maintain your skill.

As potential first steps, there are also non-lethal force options
that would be prudent to have available. I would recommend a full
size can of OC/pepper spray, and/or a big 4-5 cell maglight kept
handy. Why are you carrying it? Because I need a flashlight to
check things on the bus, and tap my tires...

The key to this is to recognize the risk exists, develop your
ability to protect yourself from the risk, and then hopefully never
need to use the ability.
