Cross Posting
Hi, Brian (and all)--
We only participate in the two no-pay/Yahoo forums that your e-mail is addressed to. I guess the only thing I would add to this thread is that, out of respect for the owners/moderators of each group, I usually do a separate post (identical copy/cross-post) to each, rather than including both in the "To" line (and, no criticism meant that you did this, Brian). At some point, it just seemed like a polite thing to do (and Gary's e-mail with the short list of requests about avoiding references to other groups seems to confirm this as a good idea to me). Welcome to the Blue Bird forums, Brian! The combined forums represent a fantastic online community of folks who are supremely generous and sharing of their expertise and concern, and they are all just grand people! I may be oversimplifying it a bit, but this last year, there just happened to be a few differences of opinion about how to run an online forum; however, I hope you can eventually get a sense that it's still all one big Blue Bird community that just happens to be divided among a couple forums. Say, the Pacific Northwest Blue Birders had 5 retreats in 2005 (many of them in the southern part of WA), and we know from the direct experience of meeting each other how grand our fellow Blue Birders are! Seeing that you are in Oregon, I'll forward some info to you (announced earlier on the forums) on our first scheduled retreat in 2006. Perhaps you can join us! Neither are the specifics of much concern. However, what is of concern is that I/we respect what has happened in the past and not intentionally (or unintentionally) pour salt in the wounds of others who have been around much longer. So far, I have found valuable information on both groups and I have no preference with one or the other. When I post questions, I want to reach the broadest user base that I can and so I have been cross posting to both groups. Am I ruffling anyone's feathers by doing this? You can respond to me off-line if you want. If I (and other new users) need to seek one group or the other for certain types of questions, then I/we will have to spend more time developing knowledge and relationships with each of the groups. For future consideration, I don't think the memberships of either group will remain stagnant. New people will come and will have no idea which group to post questions and will most likely join and monitor both groups. I searched the groups for any information on cross posts, but didn't find anything, nor could I find anything in the files section. Instead of developing a habit that might be annoying to people, I thought I would just be bold and ask the question. At minimum, I would think the moderators of each of the groups would respond allowing some sort of record that new users can use to understand the proper etiquette.
