Texas driving requirement for motor homes
The Texas statute is quite clear that the driver of a recreational vehicle is
EXEMPT from any type of license other than the ordinary drivers license. Go to
the web site maintained by the Texas Department of Public Safety and they will
cite you to chapter 522.004 which EXEMPTS all RV's from CDL requirements. It is
not relevent whether the test is easy or hard if you don't have to take it;
unless you just enjoy that sort of thing.

George, My research came up the same, Class "B". This entails studying
certain chapters in the CDL handbook, a writen test (13 questions) and
about a two mile drive in the RV with a DPS tester with you. I worried
about this, but after I took test and drive I found it was a piece of cake.

Wallace,

When I did my research, I found that a "Commercial" Drivers license is

not required, however, they did require a Class B license for anything

that weighed over 26,000 lb. That was one of the determining factors

as to why we went to SD.

drivers of RV;s must have a commercial in Texas. Section 522 of VATS sets
up requirements for commercial operator license. Section 555.004 (4)
specifically excludes from CDL the driver of a recreational vehicle; in the
same section RV is said to mean a motor home, along with trailers, etc.
meant for temporary occupancy as a home.

of weight or length, to have a CDL. From my experience, I have found that
most DPS license offices do not know this.
