Eaton Power Steering Pump- 83FC
I used a Saginaw pump off a old medium duty Chevy truck and a steering box off
an old Louisville L8000 on the FC 31' gas I'm restoring. The retrofit was
pretty simple and required no welding, just a 1/2" adapter plate, that was
fabbed up on a burning table and four 3/4" bolts to the frame. It don't squeal
when I turn the wheel with the bird motionless, quite unlike the FC 35. I'm
pleasantly surprised and I might look into making the change to the 35. Saginaw
pumps are more plentiful than the limey piece BB used. When a new pump is
installed it is critical to thoroughly bleed all air out of the system before
placing in service.

Steve and Andy, I think the most strain on hoses and pumps, and
cause of early failure is when a driver turns the wheel in a
motionless bus. I fear a more powerful pump will allow a driver to
blow a hose or fitting too easy. Andy, come'on- pick up a mid size
wire feed welder. You will look at every project through a autodark.
