Air intake cowling
I think the rear opening yields cleaner air coming into the engine. Any
solids in the air would have a harder time being sucked in. I have never
seen a Bluebird with one facing rear but the snorkel on my gas Rover faces
rear and all the camel tophy rovers did also. Original snorkels were for
desert running to not injest solids. In this country mostly for wading. The
air at the top of a bus would be some of the cleanest compared to all
vehicles, so probably not a factor.
