It heats the metal pan only. it must be ferrous --magnetic-think steel/iron
It uses the principal of magnetic induction only heats the pan/pot.
Yes it's a magnetic wave exciting the iron atoms creating heat.
Used in industry to heat bearings to expand for a tighter fit on shafts.
