FWIW, I installed the variable speed ShurFlow last fall... and used
it during a couple of short trips of a week to 10 days last winter
and then a 3+ month 'voyage' between the end of March to the end of
June. Conditions have ranged from freezing and snow to hot-humid
Texas. It's operated with no problems since I installed it. (It
replaced dual ShurFlow fixed speed pumps that were both leaking (in
need of a rebuild) I figured that I may as well just replace them and
simplify the plumbing at the same time.)

I'm not denying your problems, nor denying that the ShurFlow quality
may have degraded. However, with whatever luck may be involved, I
haven't shared your experience. (Count me as breathing a sigh of
relief -- so far...)
