Battery Charger
Alvie,
I haven't been following this thread other than I recall a posting saying your charging system went south.Give me some details and I'll try to take a look at the options you can take. What charging system is in the coach now? How many? What capacitie(s)? Were you happy with what's there now up until the failure? How many batteries did the failed unit(s) charge? Batteries 6 or 12 volt? Battery Charger
There was a single charger and I am not sure of the capacity but will
look it up tonight and let you know. "I went out to the coach yesterday to check the fridge and noticed the gas alarm was beeping. Long story short, the battery charger had gone south and thus the house bateries were down to almost zip. Any suggestions on what charger to buy? I have 8 deep cycle 12 volt house batteries as well as the standard 3 starting batteries." Generally, it's better to split the batteries into 2 "banks" for
charging efficiency. Pete Masterson '95 Blue Bird Wanderlodge WBDA 42 El Sobrante CA aeonix1@... Battery Charger
My '92 had twin IOTA 45-AMP chargers from the factory.
I am about to rip both my IOTA's out and Inverter and replace with a single Xantrex Inverter/Charger. I came to the conclusion that for the price of two chargers, it was the best option. Plus I get the latest Inverter technology with it. Be aware the BB inverter circuit is setup a little differently than other coachs I have owned. You can see a thread on the other Yahoo Wanderlodge forum that discusses the BB Inverter electrical system setup. Battery Charger
Alvie,
If the inverter is working I would not replace it. Check out "Hot Deals" from Progressive Dynamics. http://www.progressivedyn.com/hotdeals.html Unit PD9280R is an 80 amp converter/charger and costs $213.00. The hot deals are reconditioned units. Actually I think they are new. I bought two of their reconditioned units a couple years ago to replace the two original battery boilers. They are still doing their job today. Progressive has a good reputation in the industry. Battery Charger
Alvie, you have the same set up I do. the heart inverter has a
battery charger built into it and the PO (previous owner) added two Truecharge 40amp chargers. the Truecharge units claim they deliver 80 amps of value because of the way the unit delivers it. but who knows what the truth is. If the converter ( batteryCharger) burnt out in the heart inverter and your PO installed the WFco unit, maybe there is an issue with circuitry or somthing that has now failed two units. My two retrofit Truecharge units are located in the third bay back from the entry door. it looks as it took some effort to install them there, I assumed it was placed there to keep it away from the engine heat which is close to the inverter/converter location???????? After replacing 12 interstate 12v batteries in two years I removed all 8 house batteries , removed the upper tray and modified the box and lower tray to house 6 L16 batteries. I think two or four l16 would do as the runtime to recharge a battery is directly proportional to the amount of use. I can run on the 6 batteries for 3 days then recharge with 6 hours of genset charging. or I could run on 2 batteries for one day with two hours of genset charging. The main advantage of having 6 batteries is if I run the genset 2 hours every day the batteries dont cycle through a spent recharge. (Batteries have a limited number of depleted recharge cycles.) I would look for the reason the wfco converter and or heart converter failed prior to installing another . The failed converter/charge must be a result of some issue???? I often wanted to look into a post that claimed that their detroit alt got hot when the shore power charger was on????? I wonder if the Converter/charger gets hot when the detroit is pumping amps????????? It seems to me that RV's have a higher than normal engine altinator failure and 110 batterycharger failure. Battery Charger
Greg,
Thanks for the response. I in fact do not know whether the Heart battery charger works or not as the WFCO converter/charger was installed at the time I purchased the coach. Is there a simple way to determine whether the Heart charger does in fact work? The inverter part of it seems to be fine. I hope to have time this evening to pull the WFCO and the Heart from the compartment above the battery trays to see if I can figure it out but if you have any suggestions that might simplify the task I would sure appreciate them. Thanks, Alvie Miller 93 WLWB 40' Arthur IL --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Gregory OConnor" > > Alvie, you have the same set up I do. the heart inverter has a > battery charger built into it and the PO (previous owner) added two > Truecharge 40amp chargers. the Truecharge units claim they deliver 80 > amps of value because of the way the unit delivers it. but who knows > what the truth is.
