Greg,

I hate to correct you, but BB *DID* have steerable tag axles for a
year or two. Also, as of the 97 model, the tag is liftable not just
dump and drag.

Paul, liftable and steerable are both good things. I wonder why
steerable is advantagous on such a long wheelbace, are the axles
farther apart on the steerable units?? mostly my comments were made to
pointout dump turn capabilities to others when a need araise, hate to
see some one pay for a tow off a curb.

Jay,

That _is_ a hell of a deal. Just make sure that it is in good
mechanical condition so that it isn't a "project" coach. (Those that
are asking $200K and more seem to be hanging around on Bird
Connection for a very long time...)

In general, your state issued driver's license would be honored until/
unless you became a resident of the state. The 65 foot "combined
vehicle" length (RV and toad) does apply.

The California Highway Patrol (and city or county police
organizations) are usually busy with other matters, so your license
and/or vehicle length are only likely to be checked if you were
stopped for some other reason. Keep in mind that California has a 55
MPH speed limit for vehicles pulling a "trailer" -- that would
include a toad.

I thought that was corrrect, as the tag axle has the wheel in the outward
position as the steer wheels.

Think about having a steerable tag axle, allowing you to truely pivot
on your drive axle, next best thing to thrusters on boats..LOL. I have
never owned or driven a steerable tag, but know that a few American
coaches were made this way as some BBs and I believe Newell as well
and it is my understanding that they were a bit problem prone. I hope
someone on this list has one and can educate us all.

center to center wheelbase from drive to tag is the same liftable vs
conventional stops tire scrub \ you just have to remember to dump tag
same as your triaxle dumps with pusher

Howard,

Pete already gave you the answer that I would give. Your license as a
driver has reciprocity. Your vehicle needs to meet the CA requirements
such as overall length and speed limits.

I believe all of the steerable tags were recalled and replaced with
fixed tags. I was at the Birds Nest when the recall was going on.
Turns out the steerable tags were not designed for the BB weight.
There were 4-5 coaches there at the Birds nest and the owners were
not happy. The first couple were replaced without the owners consent.
