Pokeys fan issue resolved, keeping the bus, generator rebuild?

Anytime you name anything (cat, dog, Bird, lizard) you become
emotionally attached and you're doomed to never get rid of it! I love
the name however. LOL!

The later MB model 123 cars with the 616 and 617 (4&5 cylinder)
engines had the newer pencil type plugs. I believe the change was
made between 80 and 82 or somewhere in there. My 77 300d with the
617 had loop type originally. The 617 in my 85 300TD had the pencil
type originally.

How true. Through the miracle of the internet, I was even able to find 'Pokey"
decals for the back window. I guess if I could find a green Gremlin or Pacer for
a Toad, I could have a "Gumby" as well. Doug

I put a block heater on our Perkins. I also carry a small Honda incase we
are not plugged in and I need to get the batteries back up or run the block
heaters. Our Perkins smoked until it was run hard. We had a three day
outage outage and it was used to power our house and two of the neighbors.
After three days of hard use it did not produce any visible smoke.

As Ernie can tell you the Perkins starts at very cold temperatures IF
you know how to start it. First make sure that the glow plugs
actually work. If you want the diesel to start right then you need to
do the correct preventative maintainance on the generator. If it
smokes there is a reason. Depending on the hours you may have to
remove the injectors and either clean or replace them. YOu need a
good air filter that is clean, and if you have the vertical one that
needs to have oil in the bottom, make sure its at the proper level.
Treat the Perkins right and it will out last both of us. I
rebuilt my control box and it made a significant difference in
starting reliably.
