Dometic refir not cooling well

Scott,
I replaced mine with an O/E BB replacement fan. The other fellows that used the
electronic fans have a good idea that I didn't consider. No more power than the
computer fans draw I could see having 2 or 3 seperately wired with power from
the fan switch but with different rated thermostats say 85 degree, 100 degrees
and 110 degrees this should work quite well.

Well, I went and picked up a 4.7" computer fan from Radio Shack and
have wired it directly to the 'Refir Fan' switch in the coach. It is
running now and I have turned the refir back on, we'll see if she
cools. It is starting from ambient temp above 90, so I expect it
will be at least 24 hrs before I see if the fan had any effect or
not. I will post my results.

Another thing to do and maybe it's been mentioned before, is to add one or
two little fans inside the frig., the double D battery squirrel cage ones
that Camping World sells. With these fans it's good to leave a little space
along the frig. sides for the air to circulate. The batteries will last 35 -
40 days.

Greg,
I agree, a good fan at the upper vent would be better. I used the adjustable
thermostat with on/off to control the fan. If I just had a switch, and it
was ON, it would be on all the time unless I remember to read my Quick
Reference card. You'll know what I mean in another 20 years.

God, I love this web site. I have all of the symptoms you guys have
been describing and then some, the ice maker also leaks when turned
on! Turn it off and the leak stops. Freezer works great. Never cool
enough in the fridge for safe long term food storage.
My PT42 has an angled fridge and the compartment it is mounted in is
cavernous.

This configuration is not good. There is too much area for the
convection process to do its job.

I was in the process of installing cooling fans in the engine
compartment and inverter bay, so I guess I'll just keep moving around
the coach to the fridge compartment.
According to the above web site, they state that direct cooling of
the coils is not appropriate. But there is a problem with this! The
specs given for a proper installation are less than 1" from the coils
up to the roof, so you would have to put in ductwork and maybe some
baffles from the side vent up to the roof vent. Not really what I
wanted to hear. The space is so large behind the fridge that I
believe direct cooling with small fans is the only practical way of
venting this set up. Some of guys on this post are doing this and
they are having good results with it. In addition some type of power
vent in the roof to extract the hot air would also be good. A max air
would defiantly do it, but mounting it in place of the fridge vent on
my coach does not look encouraging at the moment.

I believe it will have to be a set up on the inside of the fridge
compartment. Not really a problem I have to pull the fridge to fix
the ice maker water leak anyway. And there is enough space behind the
fridge to mount just about any type of fan system you need. I may be
wrong but I think a fan in the side vent won't help as much as a fan
in the roof vent. The idea being that it's a convection system and
moving air past the coils and extracting it from the compartment is
how this was designed to work.

I'll be watching these posts with great interest, any thoughts or
ideas would be greatly appreciated. As soon as I'm done with the new
engine compartment fans I'll post the results and pics, this may not
be practical but they were fun to put together. 2 - 16" 2500 CFM fans
on the louvered door curb side, 1 small fan in the opening between
the inverter compartment and the engine compartment. 2 – 14" 2000 CFM
fans on the Air Cooler and Radiator, and 1 or 2 fans on the A/C
condenser size yet to be determined, all fans are thermostatically
controlled with manual over ride. Oh yea, fans in the A/C compartment

You can usually locate them at Radio Shack or a local electronic
parts warehouse in your area. Here is a website that sells them-
[http://www.sofasco.com/products/dc_axial/d12038.html] They can be
easily fit into the compartment with zip-ties that secure them to the
coils or any other fixed surface. They draw almost no current and can
run continuously. Most of the 'birds came with a snap-disk thermostat
in the reefer compartment. I removed mine and wired the fans directly
to the "Refrigerator Fan" switch that is on my galley control panel
(right below the water pump switch)

Kent,
Your comment about your icemaker leak triggered an unpleasant memory. After the
coach had set winterized for a couple months, we took a winter trip and noticed
the icemaker was leaking. Every other pipe had been purged of water but the
tiny plastic water line and a plastic valve in the icemaker had split. Since
then, I run the icemaker throgh a couple cycles after purging the water lines

Why would you want to freeze water in your fridge? Does'nt that make
the beer hard to drink?
