With that said and done I am sure that we all have quite a few tales and anecdotal evidence. When there was a temporary bridge running across Pensacola Bay the local (Florida) DOT had a weight in motion scale set up along with a more permanent set of scales to enforce a weight reduction on the temp bridge. PT-40's are REALLY heavy and as we came across the weight in motion scales the scalemaster hit the lights to pull us in. As I changed lanes he turned the light off and I quickly got back into the lane to bypass the scales. Since he had let several trucks go by before we got to the first scale and then he pulled in several trucks after us I took it that as soon as he realized that we were a motorhome they didn't want to mess with us. In my opinion if you are overweight then you can be fined, just like a commercial vehicle. But in most states the diesel cops are only taught the laws that relate to commercial vehicles and, in fact, in many states they are ordered specifically not to mess with non- commercial vehicles, so that's why they generally let motorhomes slide. So far we (motorhome owners) as a class have basically just been lucky IMHO. But sometimes it's better to be lucky than talented --PirateJohn-- Jacksonville, FL 1982 PT-40 |

John,
I think you're on to something there. As my 'bird is over 40', I'm required to have (at least) a "non-commercial class B" license (in California and many other states). For whatever reason, this license category is apparently really rare. The clerks and the drive test examiner hardly knew what to do with me. Eventually everything was figured out, the papers were signed, I was tested, and given my license. I had a feeling that they crew hadn't seen one of these before -- or not in a long time. This was at one of the _few_ CA DMV offices that do "commercial" tests. Pete Masterson '95 Blue Bird Wanderlodge WBDA 42 El Sobrante CA aeonix1@... Three or four lines of large letters, Max. The Federal DOT recommendation is for 3 signs: Weigh Station 1 mile. Weigh Station next exit. Weigh Station ->. A fourth sign, specified "if required by law" says All Trucks Commercial Vehicles Next Right or All Trucks Commercial Vehicles must exit Next Right In Maryland's case, they don't require all trucks to stop. Just those over 10,000 lbs GVW. So the important thing to them is to get the "over 5T GVW" into the sign, and they do it at the expense of the Trucks Commercial part. They don't want the lighter delivery trucks, which have to stop in many states, from cluttering things up. The non-standard wording, rather than trying to increase the number of exiting vehicles, is actually designed to decrease them. Here's a typical from Colorado, just to show that Maryland is not alone in using wordage that could possibly be construed to include RVs: All Trucks Commercial and Towed Vehicles Must Exit Next Right But guess what? They don't mean me with my Jeep Liberty toad. Tom,
I know I am hard to convince... I do not normally drive this route through MD, I usually go down rte 13 to the Chesapeake Bridge tunnel... I do not know what others do, but I read every sign on the road and if it says to go through the scales, I go through the scales, I do not need to be stopped for not following the rules, whether you think I should just go past them or not... I am just relaying my experience and not trying to make others do what I do... I did not know if they had changed the rules on the scales or not, so I was just keeping things on the up and up... It applies to ONLY commercial vehicles that are for hire........ .period. If you are worried about Maryland weigh stations you can read to your hearts content here and you find absolutely nothing about motorhomes or any other non commercial vehicle having to utilize these weigh stations. http://www.sha. state.md. us/businesswiths ha/trucking/ oots/truckweista /truckweista. asp Then read this: http://www.sha. state.md. us/businesswiths ha/trucking/ oots/truckweista /MotorCarrierHan dbook.pdf Now if you want to continue to worry about Maryland weigh stations.guess you can.
