Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
After reading in my 3208 tech manual I took notice that the vlv lash
adjustment is stated in the manual to be completed every 24,000 miles and if the engine is not run for six months it should be done again. I just wonder how many people do this? especially if there rig has not been ran for six months. Well anyway oft to the shop with the Rebel Bird Monday to have have old vlv adjusted and will drop another $400 dollars for that opperation. Owell as they say "You can't take it with you" Jon 78 wanderlodge Rebel Bird |

Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
Interesting Jon. What is the date on your Cat 3208 manual. My factory
manual says to check the valve lash at first 250 hours and then after 2000 hours or 10,000 gallons of fuel. That equates to approximately 80,000 miles. This is part of caterpillars Maintenance Management Schedule. tom Warner Vernon Center, NY 1982 FC35 1985 PT40 At 12:21 AM 3/25/2006, you wrote: >After reading in my 3208 tech manual I took notice that the vlv lash >adjustment is stated in the manual to be completed every 24,000 miles >and if the engine is not run for six months it should be done again. Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
I haven't done any valve work on the CAT but I have worked on valves
on front engined gas motorhomes. I don't see why the front end needs to be removed. It looks to me as if only the top and sides of the dogouse need to be removed to access the valve covers. Perhaps there is more to a valve lash adjustment on a CAT than I imagine. If so, could someone explain what else needs to be accessed besides the valves themselves under the valve covers? Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
Jon the factory manual that I have is Caterpillar Operation &
Maintenance manual SEBU6315 dated May 1992. It is for Cat 3208 from 40S1-UP, 99R1-UP,32Y1-UP, 2Z1-UP, 51Z1-UP. Be advised that Caterpillar also changed the amount of oil that the engine held and reduced them by 2 quarts. Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
Get the valve covers off and adjust like any other engine. Exhaust almost open
adjust the intake. Intake almost closed adjust the exhaust. Do one cylinder at a time. You bump the engine over with the starter so you need to disconnect the fuel solinoid first, or use a remote button arrangement. Of course Cat has a different method, but I get by with the old drag racer way. Need some type of answer? ALSO STATES THAT THIS IS FOR ENGINES PRE-1986. All three books are put out by Caterpillar. Tom what book do you have? Jon 1978 Wanderlodge Bremerton Washington |

Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
Jon,
I would think if you can get a wrench on the crank pulley bolt that will fit between the pulley and radiator, you could readily turn the engine from lying under the front bumper area. You won't be able to see the timing mark to determine TDC since I believe it is on the block near the top area of the pulley, but you can probably make a pretty good guess at it from the position of the valves, or use a mirror or something. It's rather important to get the first set at TDC and position the crank pulley from there for the other adjustments. Perhaps by going back and forth a little with the pulley and making several checks before moving on, you can ensure you've found the exact point of max gap measurement and make your adjustment if needed, then move on. The hardest part as I see it will be going from lying on your back under the coach to standing over the engine time after time. It can wear you down. When I did my engine mounts it seemed like that process would never end, I slept well afterwards. I'm thinking it's a 1-1/4" socket that will fit that pulley nut. Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
Well today I just installed a new Costco Car shelter for the Rebel
Bird. I have gone through this process before for my Winnebago's and its fairly simple to do. The only thing wrong with this shelter is that's it on 20 ft long. Probably someone out there is wondering about the height being to short. Well I have resolved that problem by putting on extensions on the legs of the shelter and it sits at the middle I guess around 13 to 14 feet. It kind of skinny as its only 11 foot wide but that's ok as I still have a good foot and half on both sides. The length issue is simple and that is just to get another white tarp and drape it from the front and back of the shelter to the bus. This Costco shelter is about the cheapest way I know of to protect my bird and like I said before I have used this idea before. Oh yes tomorrow I'm going to climb around the front of the Rebel Bird and see just how hard it would be to do those vlvs in place. Hay I oust to be a Marine Machinist and if I can work on a Submarine with no space I sure can work on this! Jon Rebel Bird Bremerton Washington |

Valve adjustment on 3208 Engine
Jon just one thing. I once covered a 12ft aluminium boat with a blue tarp and
didn't secure it tight enough all the way around. To make a long story short the wind whipped one end of the tarp back and forth over the oxidized prow of the boat and vola it was all shinny again. Tarps and wind can remove oxidation and paint. Rob, Sue & Merlin 94 WLWB Quoting Jon > > > > Well today I just installed a new Costco Car shelter for the Rebel > > Bird.
