Battery Charger

Ended up replacing the old tires with the Kumho's today..$1917.00 The
old tires had cracks all over...Those were 8 year old
Continentals...This bus will probably make one trip to PA and then the
rest will be local in state trips. Maybe if the coach was going to get
more use then I would have spent more for the better brand tires..
Ok, for my question, I am going to replace my old battery chargers
(100amp) with a new Progressive Dynamics with charge wizard. Would I
be able to use a 60amp instead of a larger unit? I have seen a few
80amp units but not many. I can get a 60amp for $135.00 with the
Charge Wizard.
I am also going to get new batteries also. Have not decided on the
brand yet..have heard good things on here about Sams Club. Trojans are
an option also....

I have a PD 80 amp with Charge Wizard, I recommend it highly. Not
sure what difference would be 60 & 80 units, but mine does a great
job. I also run T-105's, most folks I talk to call them the best,

I am using two PD 60 amp chargers, without the charge wizard. Curt Springer
uses the same set up, but with the wizard, and both of us are happy with the
PDI chargers. I usually unplug one of the chargers while at home, and when
not using the BB...on the road, and when camping, both are plugged in so
rapid charging is possible. As for the Sam's club batteries, I six new 6v GC-1
(6v golf cart batts) almost 5 yrs ago, and they are still holding a charge
like when new (knock on wood).

I hear the TruCharge chargers are nice, but a little expensive when compared
with the PDI units. So far, no complaints about the PDI's,,,you can get
them at Camping World, or from their factory website (you can get some good
deals on the refurb units when they are available...FYI).

BTW...I was at Sam's Club the other day, and saw that they now sell truck
and bus tires, and RV tires (12R22.5's, etc.)...has anyone looked into the tires
they sell for RV's...and the prices?? I didn't have time to check with a
"Tire Associate" like the advertising kiosk said...just curious....

Hello, Chris.

Technically speaking, your battery charger should not exceed 27% of
the banks total Amp Hours in charging Amps. I am strictly talking
about conventional lead-acid batteries.

In other words, if your bank has a total of four hundered Amp
Hours. You should not use anymore than a 108 amp charger.

You can use smaller chargers without any problem. Of course, it
will take longer to charge the bank, more gen run time, than if you
had a larger charger.

IOTA chargers can be configured in parallel with a common external
micro-processor called an "IQ Smart Charger."

This allows you to use two 55 Amp chargers to achieve 110 Amps. Or
two 75 Amp chargers for 150 amps, or two 90 Amp chargers to get 180
charging Amps. Their largest charger is 90 Amps.

If you were to use one of the single models, say the 90 Amp model,
it is available with an internal "Smart Charge" micro-processor.

Thanks to all of you for the information.
I was going to purchase one 80AMP charger with the charge wizard to replace
the 2 factory 50AMP chargers (the plugs were burnt looking ). I would like to
get by with just one 60AMP PDI which I can get on E-Bay for $135.00 with the
charge wizard. I did find one 80amp PDI for $279.00..not from the same seller...
I guess I may buy 2 60amp chargers. I will leave the bus plugged in while in
storage for the charge wizard to control the charge amount.
Thanks for the good idea, never thought of using two smaller chargers...

I bought the PDI 80 amp charger net off Ebay for $199 plus shipping.
Replaced 2 regular bat. chargers. Will check with PDI to see about
getting a backup 80 amp refirb. model.

I went out to the coach yesterday to check the fridge and noticed the
gas alarm was beeping. Long story short, the battery charger had gone
south and thus the house bateries were down to almost zip. Any
suggestions on what charger to buy? I have 8 deep cycle 12 volt house
batteries as well as the standard 3 starting batteries. Thanks for your
assistance.
