Generator Won't Start?
Tom-
It turns over great just won't catch. I pulled the fuel solenoid lever as I tried to start but no go. doesn't appear the fuel solenoid/arm is moving when I hit the start button? I don't see a circuit breaker on the control box but the fuse is good inside the box.... thoughts? Mike,
Outside the voltage issue Curt mentioned, manually pulling the fuel solenoid arm should have started it - if you are getting fuel. Have you checked to see if you are getting fuel pressure at the output side of the lift pump? Also check all the fuel line fittings to make sure you don't have an air leak. Doesn't take much of a leak on a older weaker lift pump to not get fuel to the injector pump. Spent hours chasing the problem on my 83 PT40 before I checked the fuel pressure and changed out the lift pump. Generator Won't Start?
Mike, try to operate the solenoid with a 'porta power battery pack'.
The solenoids need major amps to open but low draw to remain open. If the battery pack opens it ( click) try and start. If you can remove the PPBP and the fuel stays open ( genset continue to run), it may be bad connection issue???(not enough guts to open) Note this will bypass all the safty Murphy shut down devices as they cut the power to the FS to shut down the system. On a jobsite repair , I have run a wire from the starter power ( between Starter sol. and starter motor) to the fuel shut off , to give a faulty FS more push to open. Cat replaced the 3208 fuelshut style on later electronic engines with a high amp open ;low amp remain-open fuel shutoff that requires two relays (Dodge Cummings had it since 90). this can run on low low battery and works well with the air start trucks (starter motors are powered like a pneumatic wrench) Gregory O'Connor 94pt Romoland Ca --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Mike Meister" <mike.meister@...> wrote: > > Tom- > It turns over great just won't catch. chokes/restricts the start effort. will check fuel now and report back thanks --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "mbulriss" <mbulriss@...> wrote: > > Mike, > > Outside the voltage issue Curt mentioned, manually pulling the fuel > solenoid arm should have started it - if you are getting fuel. Uh Mike,
I'm a little confused. In your response to Tom, you said "doesn't appear the fuel solenoid/arm is moving when I hit the start button? " In this message, you say it is moving. That's good. Sounds like it's working properly. Just out of curiosity, have you tried bleeding the injectors yet? I'd still check that fuel pressure on the lift pump before I moved on to bleeding however. Generator Won't Start?
Mike,
While you are checking for fuel there are a couple clues you gave that may need to be explored. It was running, started 10 times, tried won't start. Did you so ANYTHING to the genset between the time you stopped the generator till the time you tried again? Do you remember what station you depressed the switch to stop? Sometimes these rocker switches will stick (mine has) in the OFF position. Should any station be stuck in the off position and you are trying another it won't start. Just to be sure rock them all back and forth stopping on the center. You said in an earlier post the the fuse blew a "couple" months ago and you replaced it. Fused circuits are sized for normal load plus momentary overload protection. If say, you replaced this fuse with a much larger size the circuit may have given up the ghost, even if you placed a known good fuse in the holder. Just the blown fuse alone suggests that SOMETHING??is not quite right. Bob not quite right in that circuit. --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Mike Meister" <mike.meister@...> wrote: > > the fuel solenoid arm is moving and if I pull it it actually > chokes/restricts the start effort. > > will check fuel now and report back > > thanks > > > > > > --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "mbulriss" <mbulriss@> > wrote: > > > > Mike, > > > > Outside the voltage issue Curt mentioned, manually pulling the fuel > > solenoid arm should have started it - if you are getting fuel. > Have > > you checked to see if you are getting fuel pressure at the output > side > > of the lift pump? Generator Won't Start?
the only thing that I can think of is that I might have turned the
gen off the last time it was running by using the disconnect switch (which is to the ground) It sat a week and then would not start. I have three on/off stations dash, kitchen, gen control box but I will check to see if one is stuck the ceramic fuse may not have actually blown but I replaced it anyway with a like rated fuse and I just checked it and it is ok --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "one_dusty_hoot" > > Mike, > > While you are checking for fuel there are a couple clues > you gave that may need to be explored. > > It was running, started 10 times, tried won't start. > Did you so ANYTHING to the genset between the time you > stopped the generator till the time you tried again? > > Do you remember what station you depressed the switch > to stop? > Sometimes these rocker switches will stick (mine has) in > the OFF position. Generator Won't Start?
Mike,
So you kil the engine by shutting of the 12 VDC at your newly installed disconnect switch? Hummmm....another piece of meat on the platter. Let me see,,,,(stroking my chin) Don't know what the alternator would do in a case where the alternator needed the battery reference for to operate a regulator. No output control? This is a diesel motor, right? You can bypass circuits with a length of wire. Do you have a 12 V test light, or Meter? You have a start/stop station at the genset? Press the stop and at the same time check the voltage at either on of the glow plugs. Got voltage? Good! No voltage, gotta do it a different way. Starter spin fast? or have you worn it down? Need a good battery, motor needs to spin fast. Fuel at the injector pump? Good! Remember, bleed the system of all air. Air compressses in the fuel line and the injectors won't open. If the starter spins fast, and There is voltage at the glow pugs, and There is fuel going into the injectors, and There is no air in the fuel lines, and The engine still won't start There is a possibility that one of your injectors is stuck open not allowing a pressure build in the fuel. It may start and run rough as a cob but if it doesn't settle down and run smoothly then one or more of the injector lines will need to be bled. Before getting into doing anything else, lets hear from you. Generator Won't Start?
Isnt there a red button on the front or the generator control box
that can be pushed in to reset? If not and you have actually pulled back on the lever in front of the fuel solenoid that connects directly tothe injection pump and it wont start then I have to believe it is a fuel problem. Is it getting fuel when it is turning over? Verify this by cracking one of the injector lines at the fuel injector and see if fuel weeps out of it. If not then you are not getting fuel to the injector pump. Have you replaced the fuel filter by any chance? tom At 10:37 AM 6/24/2006, you wrote: >Tom- >It turns over great just won't catch. Generator Won't Start?
Still waiting....Mike, did you go to lunch?
long ways from the coach? Washing the Black goo off you hands before using the computer? Ah heck!...Just funning you. Here's a couple other goodies I'll thow your way. Hey Mike, let's get this motor popping and snorting! Generally,...generally I say!, a motor will spin faster if there is no fuel verses when there is fuel in the combustion chamber. This is a good seat-of-the-pants determination if you are getting fuel to the injectors or if you are not. Reason?: Atomized fuel in the combustion chamber doesn't compress causing a greater load on the starter. In comparison to now and before would you say the starter turns the motor, slower, faster,or, about the same? 1.)To some, starting is the process of the engine turning over. 2.)To, some, starting is the process of an engine turning over till it starts running. 3.)To some, starting is the process of an engine running on its own after being started. What is your thinking, 1, 2, or, 3? It's Ok on either of these as long as we both understand the communication. Can you hear the engine fire at all, or, any pops, combustion attempts?
