Bendix Brakes won't air up

[Al]

We just had the brakes serviced by McDonald Coachworks and everything
seemed ok. Now are are in our 2nd week of vacation and we shut down
like normal and jacked the bird up. Been here for 3 days and now we
are ready to head to Charlotte, NC and the brakes will not air up. I
hear a hissing sound at the Bendix valve. Looking thru my manual now
as to what to do to get the valve to close so we can air up our brake
system. I have searched the site and dont see anything that would
lead me as to what to do next. I have tried turning off the engine
and letting sit and restart with no result so far.

Al, I guess you could be stuck in worse places. Spruce Pine is a great
area. None the less, There are a couple of big truck shops west of
Ashville that can help you out in an emergency BUT I will tell you I
had work done by the GMC place in Oct and was pretty disapointed. I had
a leveling valve replaced. Coach still leaned and well now that I
replaced all the valves I find out the "new" valve they replaced was
painted (makes me think it was used) But I got home. There is a forum
member that is from that area I will email him, he is travelling but I
am sure he will pop in.

IF you can make it to Charlotte NC there is a great shop there that
will definately treat you right. Carroll's Aligning (South Tryon St-
704-376-4471) They have been in business 60 yrs and the shop Mgr has
been there 32 yrs..great guys. Ask for Tommy Carrol, use my name.

Scott,
Thanks for the reply. Looks like I am not going anywhere till I
get air back in my brakes. I have cut all power to the bird hoping
that the electronic portion of the bendix brakes resets. That did
not work. I have read the portion on brakes in my grey box. Looks
like it is recommended that we drain the Air Tank weekly. I have
never done that but I know we just had the brakes serviced by
Coachworks. So I guess I am going to crawl underneath and open the
drain valve on the air tank and see if I get moisture out. But my
guages show less than 30 lbs of pressure so don't know if that will
work. Should I let the coach run for 10 minutes to see if the
hissing stops and the tank starts to fill?

Al,

The 6 ton jack stands are a good thing to have. Do you also have the
20 ton hydraulic jack that used to come with the Birds?

In any event, be careful. I am assuming the Bendix air dryer was
serviced at the time the brakes were worked on. Not sure which Bendix
you have, but look for any obvious loose fittings on the Bendix dryer.
If you start the engine and crawl under, it should be obvious where
the air hiss is coming from. I had the AD-2 dryer and spitter valve
serviced on my 83 PT40 and on the very next trip lost all air pressure
after about 50 miles of travel. The over-pressure pop-off valve on
the side of the dryer had aparently gotten cleaning fluid on the
threads which apparently allowed it to vibrate loose and fall off.
It had not been touched during the dryer service. Hopefully you just
have vibrated a fitting loose on the air dryer.

Al,
If you must errow be sure and errow on the caution side, Be careful, careful,
careful. These buses have been know to kill owners. Put heavy duty chocks at all
tires front and rear of each tire. I have heard of them rolling of the leveling
jacks and jumping six inch chocks. If the bus should roll of the leveling jacks
and hit the six ton jack stands I don't know if they could handle the shock
weight. I would want a Pro with the right equiptment to handle a job like this.

Mike,
I can hear and feel air coming out of the bottom of the air
dryer. I see a piece that I can take off that has three bolts on it
and also has electrical lead to it. So I am going to take it off
and see if I can see something that might have been stuck. What do
you think? I can put a picture of the unit on the site if that
helps. It says Pure Air Plus and the filter on the top says Haldex
and so does the piece on the bottom.

Hey Al

Follow all these safety inputs, the rolling bus kills.
BLOCK /CHOCK all wheels, lower the levelers to just touch the
ground, put the jacks under the frame rails, Losing air the bus
will sink , besure to be on solid level ground for the jacks and
levelers. THe spring brakes/park brakes should be applied.
put another jack near your personal body. Jacks and levelers will
not stop the bus from rolling.
I think you have a major air leak, that may be easy to fix.
Air up as much pressure as possible and peek under the bus.
Look for a broken/ open fitting or hose. This should be easy to find.

Al,

Sounds like the spitter valve is stuck open. May have a piece of
foreign material stuck in it? Which Bendix model is it? AD-9 maybe?
Let me try to get Ralph on the line also. Go ahead and post the
picture and a numer you can be reached at in case I can rustle up Ralph.

Hello Al:

Not sure which air drier you have on your Coach. Try this before taking the
plate off. There should be a 1/4 inch air line going to the pop off valve
with a connection on the out side of the drier. If you have this air line,
remove the connector and allow the back pressure to bleed off, start the
Coach and see if your air starts to build up, if it does, re connect the
1/4 inch air line and go down the road. Also if this gets you out of a
bind, the air drier needs to be serviced with a new cartridge and pop off
valve re build. The back pressure on this air line serves to tell the air
governor that your tanks are full and up to pressure.

How about that photo? it would help. Of course, all the safety precautions
to be taken under the Coach.
