Bendix Brakes won't air up

Ralph, I don't think he has the AD-2 he has a BMC and I "think" it is
the bendix pure air???? Will it work the same way?? Good to know info
though...Prolly should rebuild mine..you did it last time.

Ralph,
That got us going again. We just had coachworks rebuild the unit
and replace the canister. Do you think it has to be done again or
just a glitch. To everyone else, thanks so much for your immediate
help.

Great Al:

Not a glitch, it will happen again. Bet on it. They replaced the filter,
good, but did not rebuild the pop off valve and that is what your problem
is. The re build kit is around $15.00 and can be had at or through
O'Riely's or Napa. You can do the rebuild when you get to home base.

I had a similar situation...after some searching, and obtaining professional
help, we found and replaced the air governor (about a $50 part, and a
thousand in labor...also rebuilt the air dryer). No problems since. Before it
was
fixed, the air would air up to 30 lbs, and just stay there...hissing sound
somewhere near the top of the engine.

Ok we got about an hour or so heading towards Charlotte and it
started blowing air from the bottom of the dryer again. We tried
repeating the process you gave to us before and got a different
result this time.

Last time, we had not air comping out of the two holes that we
disconnected the line on. This time we get hot air from the dryer
and then it switches to the bottom again. I guess the air is hot
because of the driving. Anyway, no it will not pump up the system.
Should I let it cool off and retry?

I also leveled the bird like it was before so we had no air in the
system and this did not help.

Now we are Gastonia, NC which is closer to Charlotte where we have a
couple of members recommending a service center.

Was hoping that would get you in to Charolette. Am not sure how to access
the pop off valve on your unit. On the AD-2, before removing the plate for
access to the filter cartridge, you can take a large open end wrench or
pipe wrench and break loose the threads on the hexagonal end of the cap,
with that done you remove the three 7/16 inch blots that serve to keep the
plate in place, force the plate up and with a flat blade screw driver,
remove the round retaining ring then slide the plate out of the canister.
With that done, you can screw off the end of the pop off valve, then hold
the upper part of the screw shaft holding the pop off valve and un screw
the nut off the shaft. This lets you remove the pop off valve shaft. Clean
the inner housing with a clean rag, lube it liberally with grease, ( not
sure what you carry on board ) then lube the o-rings and plunger and re
install.

Again it would help to have an actual photo of your unit.

Sorry, Al, we tried, but if nothing else you know where the problem is.
Have a suggestion though. When you get to Charlotte, it might well be in
your best interest to replace the air governor ($17.00 or so part) as well.
Let us know how you fair with it. My home phone is 580-252-7694, if you
need to talk about it.

To everyone that responded, thanks!

Ok to bring everyone up to speed, we were able to get off the
mountain in Spruce Pine by taking the 1/4 air hose off and the
system started building presssure. We got to Gastonia, NC and the
dryer started purging air again. Thank God it did not act up in the
mountains on our way off Spruce Pine.

So we tried to repeat the process and that did not fix it. So we
went down to Napa and purchased an air governer and installed it.
That did not fix it. We had two friendly truckers stop for breakfast
and Kathy pounced on them to ask questions. She is good at that.
LOL Anyway before I knew it one of the truckers pulled out a
fitting to join the two hoses ( in & out ) and eliminate the dryer
till I get home. I spoke to Bob Loomas the night before and he
suggusted we do that as well. So we joined the two hoses together
and did not need the trucker's fitting since we had all the fittings
we needed on the dryer. It was a close fit with no room to spare.

Anyway so I spent the next two days calling every Haldex Dist. in
Charlotte and no one has the purge assembly. But I did locate one
in Atlanta which is on our way home. Also the unit has a purge
valve which is part of the major repair kit.

Just want to make sure the everyone is in agreement that the purge
assemble which is different from the purge valve is what I need to
make the repair. I am leaning towards waiting till I get home on
Friday to start the repair so I don't dampen anymore of the trip.

Hi Howard,
I replaced the new one with the old one since it was not the
problem. Plus I would have to adjust the pounds since it was set
for 130 and the old one was 110 lbs. I have a computer background
so I did not want to complicate the equation. Plus now I have a new
spare just in case. When I get home, I am going to change out the
purge assembly and see if that fixes my problems. I am going to
call coachworks as well and see exactly what they did. I thought
they rebuild the assembly for me and changed the filter. This is
our first major trip since the repairs so it should have lasted
longer than this.
